Three Best Surf Spots near El Cotillo

The Best Surf Spots El Cotillo has to offer are listed down below. These three spots are must-knows when going surfing in Fuerteventura. Are you not an experienced surfer yet? Consider first taking some surf lessons to make sure that you feel secure and familiar with some of the surf spots in Fuerteventura. Do you feel a bit more secure about going surfing without an instructor?

Check out the three best surf spots El Cotillo has to offer below!

1. El Cotillo

El Cotillo is probably the most popular beach break in Fuerteventura. It is a long sandy beach with peaks offering left and right waves. It is a perfect spot for intermediate surfers, but can also be used for beginner surfers – the long white water waves are ideal to set the first surfing steps. It is not necessary to paddle or swim out, which makes it an ideal location to start surfing at. It can be a bit crowded since surf schools tend to come here often. The spot works on a westerly swell and is offshore in an east wind. El Cotillo Beach Break is definitely one of the best surf spots El Cotillo has to offer.

Tips: Lock your car and hide your key properly, thieves tend to operate on cliff car park.

Best Tide: Mid tide

cotillo

2. Playa de Esquinzo

Playa de Esquinzo is a small bay located south of El Cotillo. This spot is usually less crowded than El Cotillo since it is slightly further away from Corralejo. The surf is reliable, but the waves tend to be flat during summer. The best wind direction is from the west, and waves at the beach break both left and right.

How to get there: It takes about 40 minutes to get to Esquinzo from Corralejo. From El Cotillo, just drive on the parking lot situated on the left of the street. The parking lot leads to a dirt road into the dessert which lies parallel to the coast. Follow the rocky trail for 4km until you see a white building on the right. Take the next dirtroad to the right after you have spotted the white building. The trail leads to a plateau where you can park your car. You can see the spot from the plateau – it is a bay with a beautiful sand beach.

It is recommended to have a 4×4 car when going to this surf spot, since the rocks can completely mess up your tires.

Best Tide: High Tide

3. Spew Pits

Spew Pits is a spot solely for advanced surfers. This spot usually has waves, but it tends to be flat during summer. The offshore winds are from the east. It is a good place to check out if the north shore is too cross shore or flat. It is located north of the Cotillo harbor. You can check out the best local surfers riding nice tubes in this spot, but don’t go here when you are not a very advanced surfer – It is a very dangerous wave, powerful in shallow water with a reef/rocky bottom. Many surfers go here with a board, but leave without one, this wave snaps anything it sees.
